Rise of Maratha During Peshwa Period

Balaji Vishwanath (1713-1720 AD)

  • Balaji Vishwanath started his life as a small revenue officer.
  • Shahu gave him the title of Senakarte (administrator of the army) in 1708 AD and entrusted the task of forming a new army and establishing peace and order in the country.
  • Pleased with Balaji's work, in 1713 AD Shahu appointed him as Peshwa (Chief Head).
  • Balaji Vishwanath arranged a permanent settlement between the Mughals and the Marathas which duly established the rights and spheres of influence of both sides.
  • In 1719. Balaji Vishwanath reached Delhi to help the Saiyyed Brothers, where he helped the Saryyed brothers in removing Emperor Farrukhsiyar and witnessed the weakness of the Mughal Empire directly.
